The speech examines the circulation of maritime news in the Western hemisphere, and the management of information by Europe's colonial competitors in the seventeenth century. In doing so, it provides a foundation for the exchange of values and ideas that is one of the core interests of early modern Atlantic history, and offers cross-pollination between the burgeoning fields of Atlantic studies and the history of news.
