Max Deardorff (Frankfurt): The Emergence of Mestizo and Morisco as Legal Categories: Law, Custom, and the Spanish 'Christian Republic' - 1526-1614
Vortrag im Rahmen des Oberseminars Frühe Neuzeit
10.07.2017
In a century marked by conquest and rapid social change, and in a society fascinated by both Catholic orthodoxy and limpieza de sangre (purity of blood), social categories held tremendous importance in the administration of early modern Spanish law. This presentation will explore how concerns about jurisdiction and justice contributed to the creation of intermediate Christian identities – groups considered neither neophytes nor full members in the Old Christian community—focusing on the emergence of the categories of Morisco and Mestizo.
