Florike Egmond (Leiden / Rom): European naturalists and the theatre of exotic nature in the 16th and 17th centuries

Vortrag im Rahmen des Oberseminars Frühe Neuzeit

07.06.2021

Das Oberseminar wird gemeinsam mit dem Lehrstuhl für Wissenschaftsgeschichte veranstaltet.

Egmond 1Starting in the late 17th century and going back in time to the second half of the 16th century, this presentation explores visual knowledge making by Europeans concerning exotic plants. That movement in time entails a step back from a colonial context in full expansion to one of early colonisation, and from knowledge making on the spot - in tropical nature - to knowledge making at a distance (with no living tropical plant in sight). It opens up questions of authenticating, ad vivum depicting, epistemic accuracy of images, and the incorporation of exotic plants into a European notion of nature as a theatre.
