Alejandra Irigoin (London): Why was the Manila Galleon a One Ship Trade Only? Spanish Mercantilism in Early Modern Asia
Vortrag im Rahmen des Oberseminars Frühe Neuzeit

The solitude of the Galleon which did a regular journey between Mexico and Manila over 250 years appears counterintuitive in the mirror of the other European chartered East Indies companies. Why had the Spanish merchants or king any interest on rationing the trade to a single ship? Why there was only one galleon and not a fleet carrying this trade, which incidentally had nearly no competitors?
