Milagros Arano: Cabeza de Vaca at the Rio de la Plata: Rebellion, the Archive and the Rewriting of History

On 24 April 1544, royal officials based in Asuncion (Paraguay) led an uprising against the second governor of the Rio de la Plata, Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, which quickly took the form of a modern 'paper rebellion'. This presentation recovers the history of the archives that were born to justify or denounce the controversial deposition of the royal representative in this marginal corner of the Spanish Empire. Focusing on the strategies of gestation and communication of these archives, as well as their successive (and opposing) uses and validations on the other side of the Atlantic, we propose to discuss the articulation of this case with the main problems of the relationship between information and colonial rule at the dawn of the Modern Age.
