In mid-16th century Venice, given a multiplicity of factors (for instance the larger volume of international contacts, the existence of foreigners in the city, the flourishing and relatively free book industry), a general fascination with the Reformation was shared by many citizens of the Republic, and presented Italian religious dissent a multiplicity of options in terms of religious criticism.
The talk will explore – among the several religious minorities which were represented in the lagunal city – that of the Anabaptists, also from the perspective of the efforts by the Inquisition in radically undermining their spread throughout the Republic.
