Leonardo Ariel Carriò Cataldi (London): The measure of the early modern Iberian empires: local instruments in a global context

During the early modern period, the Iberian empires reached a global extension. Yet, most of measurement and guiding instruments used to sail the waters of the oceans and exploring new lands were, somehow, technically and conceptually limited to regional scales. Drawing upon intellectual and social history approaches, in this seminar I will address this problem by exploring how instruments and knowledge production, deeply anchored in local contexts, shaped the Iberian expansion, which in turn directly transformed systems of measurement and orientation by revealing their limits.
